For wildlife, birding, and sports, the 100–400mm gives you serious reach in a well-balanced package. Even wide open it can produce beautiful results, and I find it really shines when you stop down to around f/5.6 to f/8 for the best sharpness and contrast. The zoom can feel a bit fiddly at first, but once you’re used to it, it performs exceptionally well.
