These formations occur when a parent tree falls and its root system gives rise to new trunks, creating a circle of towering redwoods. Additionally, the trail features fallen "mother trees" that serve as nursery logs, supporting the growth of ferns and young trees, illustrating the regenerative cycle of the redwood forest. On July 7, 2023, filmmaker Roman Khomlyak recorded the Cathedral Trees Trail using a Panasonic Lumix GH6 camera with a Laowa 6mm F/2 Zero-D lens.
