The trail is mostly flat, built with gravel sections and several wooden boardwalks that sit just inches above the water. Interpretive signs along the route explain how this landscape transformed within hours in 1980, turning a forested valley into a brand-new lake ecosystem. In fall 2022, filmmaker Roman visited the Mt. St. Helens area to film a straightforward virtual walking tour of the Birth of a Lake Trail. The route was in full autumn color, and steady rain created a realistic wet-weather atmosphere. Using a GoPro Hero 11 Black, he recorded the entire walk, capturing clear natural rain audio, the wet forest trail, and the fog around the lake.
