That 's what can happen if you enable Resizable Bar in both Nvidia drivers and yhour computer BIOS. For those who don't know, Resizable Bar (REBAR) is a feature reasonably modern processors (roughly going back to Zen 3 for AMD desktop, and 10th gen intel processors, assuming you update your BIOS) which allows the CPU and software to write more data into the GPU VRAM than the just 256MB. The problem is that REBAR is disabled on many games by default, with only some games having it enabled (as you can see using something like the nvidia profile inspector). Now, while you can have REBAR enabled across the global driver profile, doing this can result in system instability and performance problems due to some games / software not particularly 'liking' the setting.
