Prof Jeffrey Yoshimi is a professor in the departments of Cognitive and Information Sciences and Philosophy at UC Merced. He studies the relationship between the dynamics of consciousness and the dynamics of neural activity in an embodied brain. As part of this, Prof Yoshimi models neural networks, creates mathematical models of embodied agents and studies Husserl. Darius Parvizi-Wayne is a PhD student at Macquarie University, exploring the relationship between absorbed coping, being-in-the-world, subjectivity and active inference. He was also the host of the Active Inference Insights podcast, which is affiliated with the Active Inference Institute. Husserl was famously critical of the "mathematizing tendencies" of modern science. However, Prof Jeffrey Yoshimi and Darius Parvizi-wayne contend that mathematical methods are apt for phenomenology, and, in fact, Husserl himself used them. In this episode, we discuss the flow states through the active inference framework, Hubert Dreyfus' reading of Heidegger and the relationship between phenomenology and mathematics. After our conversation, Prof Yoshimi emailed us with the following clarification: "The discussion stayed with me for a few days and sharpened my thinking on a few issues. [...] I kept meaning to write something up on the history/Heidegger thread. The comments on Heidegger on history were almost a gaffe. I think I said that Heidegger primarily treats historical figures going back to the pre-socratics as sources of concealments, and referred to the 'The Task of Destroying the History of Ontology' (section 6 of BT). I guess I recovered with my subsequent retraction and statement along the lines of "He found things to draw on at all stages". What I missed is this story where the presocratics are more original thinkers, less polluted by the history of ontology, so that really the "concealments" start more with Plato than with any of them. But this is all a bit outside my area of expertise; I am interested in phenomenology, more so than Heidegger's historical analyses. [...] I've attached some screenshots from "Fundamental questions of metaphysics" on phusis or "presencing", which put a bit of meat on this story. The final quote suggests that Aristotle was able to hang on to some of the original meaning of the term (H tends to like Ari), but that corruption had already set in. [...] Oh, also, Zahavi is not the most cited person in the bibliometric study, but the most-cited contemporary scholar." --------------------------------------- Please consider financially supporting my work (ONLY if you have the means).
