About This Video

In this video, I’m doing something that sounds dramatic—but it’s true: puppy socialization can be one of the most dangerous things we do if we do it wrong. I take my puppy Aura out for a real-life socialization session and show you exactly how I set it up to keep her safe and confident. The hardest part? Sitting in the car for 5–15 minutes first, letting her hear and smell the environment before we even get out. That little pause helps prevent over-arousal and anxiety, and it teaches your dog that “car stopped” doesn’t automatically mean chaos is about to happen. I also show you what I do when things don’t go to plan—because they won’t always. Aura gets spooked by barking dogs, cars, and a brand-new park, so I keep the car door open as her safe retreat and switch the goal from “explore the park” to “build positive feelings.” Socialization is not about forcing greetings with people and dogs; it’s about creating neutrality in a world that isn’t built for them. I avoid dog parks, doggy daycares, and on-leash greetings because the risk is too high, and one bad interaction can leave a lasting impact. I always end sessions early, on a good note—quality over quantity—so my puppy leaves feeling brave and wanting more.
