Over 100,000 people, including 20,000 residents and 80,000 workers, were exposed to hazardous materials, leading to health problems. The Air Force and DoD were aware of the contamination but failed to address or inform those at risk. This negligence resulted in severe health issues, including congenital disabilities and childhood cancers. The Air Force's lack of acknowledgment and fraudulent record-keeping has led to the denial of medical care and compensation for affected veterans. The redevelopment of the base continues to endanger a new generation as the contamination remains undisclosed and unremediated. The base also hosted the F-117 Nighthawk, the first operational stealth aircraft in the U.S. Air Force. The F-117 played a crucial role in various military operations, including the Gulf War. During the Cold War, George AFB was involved in defending the United States against potential threats, especially from the Soviet Union. It played a significant role in maintaining national security during this period. George AFB hosted various fighter squadrons and played a key role in the training and operations of fighter aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom and the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
