The New York Times Magazine polled more than 250 music insiders and gathered six Times critics to choose the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters. One of the artists who made the list was Nile Rodgers, co-founder of Chic, the de facto house band of New York’s late-70s disco boom, and the writer behind hits like “I’m Coming Out” (Diana Ross) and “We Are Family” (Sister Sledge). The critic Jody Rosen met Rodgers in New York to talk about taking inspiration from the city’s club scene, creating his signature guitar style, and the stories behind his best-loved songs.
