With standing sc, work (sc, ch 2) into any corner ch-2 sp of square (half a corner made). Sc in next 13 sts. Work (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner, with 13 sc along each side between corners. Complete final corner with sc, ch 2, and join with seamless join or sl st to first st. Fasten off. (15 sc sts per side + 4 ch-2 spaces) Square 2 - Joining One Side Position Square 2 below Square 1. Fasten on two or three stitches before a corner with a standing sc. Work a sc in each st to corner. Sc in corner, ch 1, remove hook from loop, insert hook into corresponding ch-2 corner space of Square 1, pull loop through to join, sc back into corner of Square 2. Side Join Sequence: Sc in next 4 sts (makes 5 sc total, including corner sc), remove hook, insert into corresponding 5th st of Square 1, pull loop through to join. Repeat: Sc in next 5 sts, join to corresponding 5th st of Square 1. At last join on side, work into corresponding corner ch-2 space instead of a stitch. Note: When you reach a corner, the final join will be worked into the corner ch-2 space of Square 1 instead of the 5th stitch. Corner Sequence: Sc (5th st from side sequence), ch 1, join into ch-2 space of Square 1, sc back into corner of Square 2. Work remaining sides as normal. Join with seamless join or sl st to first st. Fasten off. Square 3 – Joining (Center Cross) Rotate squares counterclockwise (clockwise if left-handed). Position Square 3 below Square 2. Begin as with Square 2, working a standing sc two or three stitches before a corner. Join first corner of Square 3 to corresponding corner ch-2 sp of Square 2. (Sc in corner, ch 1, remove hook from loop, insert hook into corresponding ch-2 space of square above, pull loop through to join. Sc back into corner sp below). Work Side Join Sequence across side. (Sc in next 4 sts, remove hook, insert into corresponding 5th st of square above, pull loop through to join. Repeat: Sc in next 5 sts, join to corresponding 5th st of square above.) Second corner: You should have a sc in your corner after completing the side sequence. Ch 1 (or ch 2 for more space), remove hook, insert into ch-2 space of Square 1 (square on the diagonal), pull loop through, sc back into corner of Square 3. Work remaining 3 sides as normal. Join with a seamless join or sl st into first st. Fasten off. Square 4 – Joining Two Sides Rotate squares counterclockwise (clockwise if left-handed). Position Square 4 below Square 3. Begin as with Square 2 and 3 working a standing sc two or three stitches before a corner. Join first corner of Square 4 to corner sp of Square 3. Work Side Join Sequence across side. (Sc in next 4 sts, remove hook, insert into corresponding 5th st of square above, pull loop through to join. Repeat: Sc in next 5 sts, join to corresponding 5th st of square above). At intersection of four squares: You should have a sc in your corner after completing the side sequence. Ch 1 (or ch 2 for more space), remove hook, insert into ch-2 corner space of Square 1, pull loop through, sc back into corner of Square 4. Work Side Join Sequence across side. Work Corner Sequence to join Square 4 to Square 1. Work remaining 2 sides as normal. Join with a seamless join or sl st to first st. Fasten off.
