Frugal Homemaking //Fridge Clean Out// No Waste Dishes

Welcome back to Pinebrook Homestead. In our quest to be frugal homemakers, we are cleaning out the fridge. Accessing what needs used and what we have left before heading to the grocery store. I have store bought apples, mushrooms purchased on clearance, and some homemade vegetable broth. Time to get cooking! Crockpot Applesauce: Apples 1/2 cup of water 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice (fresh or bottled) 1 teaspoon cinnamon Cook on high for 4 hours, stirring frequently. The apples will break down as you stir and during the cooking time. If you'd like a smooth sauce, use an immersion blender to make smooth. Bonus: Your house will smell amazing! Cream of Mushroom Soup: 1 lb of mushrooms 1 small onion or shallot 1 tsp Olive oil Teaspoon of fresh thyme or 1/2 tsp of dried 2 Tablespoons of butter 1/3 cup flour 3 cups vegetable broth 1 cup milk Salt and pepper to taste Saute your mushrooms and onion/shallot in tsp of olive oil until the juices are released from the mushrooms. Next, add salt, pepper and your thyme. Add your two tablespoons of butter and stir until melted. Add your flour and stir covering the vegetables and cook for a few minutes to not have the raw flour. Next pour half of you vegetable broth in stirring to remove any lumps. once heated and the rest of the broth. Bring the soup to a boil. Turn down to simmer and finish with the milk. Once heated it will be nice and thick. Taste and adjust salt and pepper as preferred. Enjoy!
