Hey Felix Fab, what’s popping — in this part of my ATAK series I’m taking you by the hand and we’re installing your own ATAK/TAK server, either on a Raspberry Pi at home or on a cheap virtual Ubuntu server in the cloud. I show two routes: my go-to OpenTAKServer (OTS) because the UI is actually usable, and then the “OG big TAK Server” from tak.gov via Docker if you need the full feature set. I’m also honest here: I’m still pretty new to the whole server/network/Ubuntu world, so if you spot something, drop it in the comments and we’ll fix it together. We go through what hardware you really need (spoiler: Pi 4 with 4GB minimum — 2GB didn’t work for me) and why a VPS is often the smarter move: static IP, less pain, and you’re not exposing your home network by opening a bunch of ports. I also explain the practical differences for airsoft: OTS is awesome for beginners and has Meshtastic support, but no groups yet — meaning everyone sees everyone, so you’ll need separate servers per team (or switch to the big TAK server). Finally, I walk you through getting OTS running, logging into the web UI, creating users, and then making your server reachable with DuckDNS + Docker, plus HTTPS certs via Let’s Encrypt so you’re not living in “accept the risk” browser land forever.
