I start the shoot by shooting with the natural harsh directional light from the sun. It is around 3pm and the sun is high and bright. We have beautiful shadows created on our backdrop and this works great. The harsh light creates beautiful shadows and rich tones in both our subject and the backdrop. You only have to be extra careful with how the shadows fall on the face. A good idea is to have your subject raise their head up to get the best light on them. For the softlight, I used my large 6.5ft scrim from manfrotto/lastolite. Because of the size, it is much easier for my subject to look in any direction and still have beautiful light on her. It also reduces the intensity of the sunlight so she gets comfortable and this translates easily on camera as well...
