Shaping Head Down

In this session, we will go through the process of teaching your dog to lay their head down on the ground. You can use any cue you want and you can decide if you want your dog to just drop their head, or if you want them to drop it down and leave it on the ground for a short amount of time. Regardless of which you choose, make sure you decide as this will help you with step three, putting the behavior on cue. In the beginning, we will click and treat our dogs for laying on the ground in front of us. Then we will click and treat any head motion, then head motion down, then head on the ground. This will take several sessions to isolate. Lucy, who appears in this video, is a seasoned free shaper and this took her 30 minutes of training time to isolate. Make sure that you break down each training session into short 2-3 mini sessions. If you begin to notice frustration, take a break sooner! I also recommend propping up your phone and recording your sessions! There are many free apps on your phone that will allow you to speed up the video as I did here. You can easily see then if you are clicking and treating correctly as you will slowly see your dog's behavior changing!
