Do students practise retrieval when they study on their own? Memory, 17(4), 471–479.

I included this study because it connects to a common problem I see: a lot of students default to passive review instead of retrieval practice on their own. Active recall takes more effort (and can feel frustrating), but it’s the kind of effort that actually translates to better memory and exam performance.

Pros

  • +Highlights how students often don’t naturally use retrieval practice
  • +Reinforces the value of intentional active recall when studying independently

Cons

  • -It’s not a productivity tool—you still need a system to apply the insight
  • -Retrieval practice can feel uncomfortable compared to rereading
