People keep saying LLMs are “just fancy autocomplete.” That framing is technically rooted in how LLMs work at a basic level, but it completely misses the point. In this video, I explain why large language models deserve more respect than many people give them, why next-token prediction at massive scale leads to surprising emergent capabilities, and why the “just autocomplete” critique starts to fall apart when you compare it to how many cognitive scientists think the human brain works. I also discuss why prediction may be far more central to intelligence than most people realize. We’ll cover: what LLMs are actually doing when they generate text why “autocomplete” is an oversimplification emergent capabilities like summarization, translation, coding, planning, and creativity whether AI can generate genuinely novel ideas why the human brain may itself be understood as a kind of prediction engine predictive processing, hierarchical inference, and the broader implications for how we think about intelligence I’m not arguing that AI is conscious or sentient, and I’m not claiming that LLMs and the human brain are the same. But I am arguing that dismissing LLMs as “just autocomplete” ignores something much deeper about both AI and human cognition.
