This Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom ’64 SG surprised me—in a good way. The volume taper is actually usable, the upper-fret access is ridiculous, and once you put some drive on it, it turns into the rock-and-roll machine you hope an SG will be. Add in the USA pickups, CTS pots, oil-and-paper cap, and a hard shell case at $1229, and it’s clearly aimed at making even the snobs think twice.

- -Could benefit from a setup; action felt a little high and intonation needed minor adjustment
