When I’m adding a pile of SATA drives or building out a NAS, an LSI 9205-8i style HBA is exactly the kind of PCIe card that can expose lane-sharing problems fast. It’s a great expansion card, but only if you place it in a slot that has the lanes and bandwidth to keep storage from becoming the choke point.

Pros

  • +Adds multiple drive ports for NAS and home server storage expansion
  • +Commonly used for ZFS/TrueNAS/unRAID/Proxmox style builds

Cons

  • -Can be bottlenecked if forced into a low-lane or shared chipset slot
  • -Requires planning around slot population and motherboard lane tables
