The Incident That Stopped the Railway | Paddington Station S2 E17 | Our Stories

An incident out on the tracks causes havoc to Paddington's rush hour. When Swindon control discovers an intoxicated man running around the tracks they are forced to shut the line. Coupled with long planned engineering works, multiple late trains lead to delays, cancellations and last-minute platform changes. GWR customer support staff valiantly try to stay up-to-date with the quickly-changing information. But with a lack of facts to pass on, a number of customers lose their cool. 150 miles away, near Exeter, engineers are gearing up for a five-million-pound project to solve a long-standing problem. Cowley Bridge is a major junction on Paddington's western route and floods in heavy rain, 24 times in the past seven years. A team of engineers are working against the clock, inserting 24 huge culverts that will take the brunt of the floodwater. But with each culvert being big enough to drive a car through and weighing over 14 tonnes, precision engineering is required to ensure they fit exactly. Back in Paddington, staff are dealing with some tricky customers. One lady seems to be moving house by train. But feeling unwell, she's left it to customer ambassadors Andrew and Bea to deal with her five trolleys worth of luggage. Meanwhile on platform four a dentist is convinced he's left his bag on a train. The only issue is he's so drunk he's not sure where. Despite the best efforts of British Transport Police to assist him, when he starts swearing they're forced to physically eject him from the station.
