Chaos at Paddington as Rail Delays Hit | Paddington Station S2 E15 | Our Stories

It's a tough start to Monday morning at Paddington, as the peak service is hit by issues. Weekend works at Acton have overrun, tying up the fast line out of Paddington. And commuter trains aren't faring much better, backing up behind a slow-moving freight train that's stuck on the fast line heading towards Swindon. At 2,000 feet long and weighing in at 4,300 tonnes the freight train can't be rushed. And over on platform two, a train full of passengers and already running late, loses power and is cancelled, leading to irate passengers. Down the line near Didcot, a lorry causes chaos by ignoring the warning signals at a busy level crossing. Just as a train is approaching, CCTV cameras catch the lorry ripping off the safety barriers as it hurtles across the tracks. Without the barriers in place, all signalling systems are affected resulting in a time-consuming operation to manually talk trains past red signals - and with evening peak fast approaching, tensions are high. At route control, it's been 48 hours of back to back incidents when reports come in of a cracked rail on a busy rail crossing at Maidenhead. With trains on a speed caution, crews are up against the clock through the night to replace the 18-metre-long crossing in time for the morning service. Out on the tracks, a specialist measuring train is patrolling the mainline. Nicknamed the flying banana and crammed with computers, it acts as an early warning system by picking up defects with the rails and is quite a-peeling to rail enthusiasts.
