Why Some Partners Struggle When Athletes Retire (And Some Don't)

The part of athlete retirement nobody talks about is what happens to parents and partners when the athlete stops playing. Found a study on this and it explains why my wife handled my retirement so well while most partners and parents struggle. It's called identity foreclosure - when your whole identity is wrapped up in someone else's sport. For parents it's "my kid plays for Arsenal Academy." For partners it's living vicariously through the athlete's career. When the athlete retires, everyone loses their identity at once. My wife is the perfect case study. When I told her two years ago I was done with pro football, she said "I'm so excited to get to know a different version of you." That response is rare. She followed me through six moves in four years but always had her own friend groups, her own work, her own life outside my football career. If you're an athlete, encourage the people around you to have their own thing. If you're a parent or partner, have something outside the sport that defines you.
