Had a conversation this week with an All-American beach volleyball player who graduated last year and is now working in corporate sales. She was in tears multiple times during our call. The transition out of elite sport is brutal in ways most people don't understand. There's this God-like feeling you get when you're performing at the absolute peak of your ability. You're dominating. You're in flow. You have complete clarity and purpose because everything you do is focused on winning the game, winning the championship, supporting your teammates. And then it's gone. She goes to the gym 5-6 times a week but it's not the same. Because what is she training for? Corporate sales goals don't hit the same. The intensity, the all-consuming nature of elite sport - you can't replicate that in normal life. People say "just play rec league" but if you've been at the elite level, you know why that doesn't work. It's like telling a drug addict to just have a smaller dose. You're never going to get that same high again. This is why I'm so focused on helping athletes with the identity separation work. Who you are vs. what you do. It's the only way to move forward without feeling like you lost yourself. Also talked about: the value of in-person training with people, meeting 3 new people every week, and why athletes are the most prepared for business domination.
