His students reached out to him and asked: what’s your secret for marketing? What’s your secret for selling anything to anyone? He simply replied ‘I don’t.’ Then everyone went silent. They went like: you are a legendary marketer, you should know how to sell anything to anyone. He said: no, you cannot sell anything to anyone. It is impossible for you to sell ice to Eskimos. Everyone was shocked because they though there was some big secret. Then he said that the key here is that you want to match the offer with the audience. You want to find the right audience to sell to. So the number one mistake people make when they try to do network marketing is they try to sell their product to their friends and family. When they first get started, they say ‘hey, buy my product,’ or ‘hey, join my company.’ Their friends and family get annoyed as a result and start ignoring them. So even though they may make some sales, they are exchanging the money for their relations. It will not be worth it. The key here is you don’t want to reach out to people who don’t want your product yet. You want to look for people who already have awareness, who are looking for a solution. The question you want to ask yourself is ‘who are you really selling to?’ For example, if you are selling a weight loss supplement, you don’t want to reach out to people who are overweight and say ‘hey, you are so fat, you should buy my product.’ They will feel offended. So you should look for someone who is already looking for a solution, maybe, they are already searching on Google how they can lose weight, or they are looking for videos on weight loss on YouTube. What you should do is create a blog or a video teaching them how to lose weight, and in the end, you can introduce your product, or you can ask them to join your video list to become your subscribers. That’s the way. You want to ask who you are really selling to before you even start selling. Otherwise, it’s really hard for you to know how you can market your business opportunity. So if you are selling a business opportunity, you don’t want to reach out to anyone who doesn’t want to make money. You want to lookout for people who are already looking for business opportunities. Maybe they are already googling how to make money, or looking for videos on YouTube about how they can make money, or they are on Facebook groups about how you can make money. You want to look for people who already want to start a business, or they already have a business. That’s your ideal customer. You want to know who your ideal customer is before you even start.
