But if you are unable to do it, your business would not succeed as you will end up focusing your energy and efforts on the wrong things. In this short video, I will teach you the five different ways of understanding your target audience based on real life data. Let’s get started! A few years ago, I was running an online t-shirt store. And I tried to sell t-shirts to nurses. And because I’m not a nurse, and I have no friend who a nurse, I just imagined who nurses: so I just thought that it would be great if the nurses are like this or that. So I just used my creativity to create a bunch of designs. I hired a bunch of designers, and we created a lot of t-shirts for nurses. Then, we ran ads to nurses, ended up making no money. I made zero sales from that, so I was really frustrated. Because I thought that the t-shirt designs are so great and beautiful. I spent so much money on the design, but why is no one buying. So one day I eventually met a nurse. I was so excited that I can now talk to a nurse. So I showed her my design, and asked her that I think this design is great, but why did no one buy it. She said that yes, the design is great, but I just don’t feel like buying it, I'm not resonating with. When I asked her what she meant, she said that she did not resonate with the quote. I asked her how I can come up with quotes that she can resonate with, so she replied that maybe you can ask other nurses. That was an AHA moment for me. So I decided to join a nurse group on Facebook, and I tried to interact with them and see what do they like, and what do they think. One day I saw a quote that said that: ‘I'm a nurse, I pray for my patients, and God fights our battle. So many people were commenting ‘amen’ under that post, and sharing and liking it. At that time, I realized that I can literally just take that quote, and make a t-shirt. I did just that, and sold more than thousand units just with that quote. You can read reviews. You can go to Amazon, or Udemy to read the buyer's reviews. So if they're buying something, maybe they're buying books, or audio, you can just read those reviews to see what do they like, what do they dislike, so you can design your service or product based on that. Also you can understand them more this way because you will know what they really want based on those reviews. You can interact with them. We mentioned before that you can join groups, but if you have some friends who are actually of your target audience, like maybe you are targeting people who like fishing, and you have some friends who like fishing as well, you can just talk with them, and know what they really like, and what they really think. You can interview them as well. So if you have really close friends, you can just invite them for coffee, and ask them a bunch of questions. That's the best way for you to go about that, or you can maybe pay them a little to interview them as well. The best way is to actually become one of them. So, before I join any market, or before I started any business, I would just buy a bunch of magazines they subscribe to, or I will watch a TV show they are watching, or I will subscribe to the YouTube channel they subscribe to, because I want to understand what do they think, what do they watch. So when you are becoming one of them, you can feel the entire journey. So of you have never done fishing before, and you start learning that, you will learn about the struggle they are facing, you will understand how expensive those things are, or what are the challenges they face, so you will understand more by just becoming one of them. That's the best way for you to understand your target audience. So, today we talked about the five ways in which you can understand your target audience, based on real life data. The first one is you can read reviews, you can join their groups: Facebook group or communities, you can interact with them, you can interview them, and the best way is to become one of them.
