On Sunday, December 7th, the Missouri antlerless rifle season began slowly, with no deer sightings in the morning. After a break to deliver chestnut trees, I returned to the farm, hoping for better luck with the doe harvest. This outing was part of our ongoing effort to manage the land and enjoy the outdoors, a regular part of farm life here on the homestead. For the first two days of Missouri’s antlerless season, We saw NOTHING, the woods were silent. No movement. No deer. No excitement. Just long sits, cold air, and that familiar question every hunter asks themselves—“Am I in the right spot?” Day 2 started no different. The same Missouri timber. The same stand. The same patience tested hour after hour. When you hunt the Ozarks long enough, you learn that not every hunt is fast-paced or filled with action. Sometimes it’s about trusting the process, staying still, and letting the woods do what the woods do—on their own time. Then, without warning, everything changed. Out of nowhere, the quiet broke. Deer began appearing from every direction. One… two… then more. In a matter of moments, we found ourselves surrounded by nine deer, moving through the timber like ghosts. After seeing nothing for two straight days, the woods suddenly felt alive. There was one shooter in the group. A real opportunity—but not the right shot. With deer everywhere, one wrong move could have blown the entire group out of the area. Sometimes hunting isn’t about pulling the trigger. It’s about restraint. It’s about making the call you can live with, even when adrenaline is high and your heart is pounding. That’s what this hunt was about. This wasn’t a kill story. It was a patience story. A reminder that the most exciting moments in the Missouri woods don’t always end with a shot fired.
