If you’ve ever thrifted a random skein, inherited a mystery ball from someone’s stash, or found a half-used yarn with the label long gone… yep, same. In this video I walk you through my go-to, no-fancy-tools way to identify mystery yarn fast using three simple tests you can do at home. The goal is to figure out two big things: what the fibre likely is (natural vs synthetic vs blend) and what weight it sits in (lace through chunky), so you can actually use it with confidence instead of letting it live in the “I’ll deal with you later” bin. First up is the burn test, because how yarn reacts to a flame gives you loads of clues—like whether it melts, how it smells, and what kind of ash or bead it leaves behind. Then I show you the wraps per inch (WPI) test to quickly estimate yarn weight, which is super helpful for choosing a hook/needle size and matching patterns. Finally, I do the metres per gram (MPG) test, which is a surprisingly accurate way to estimate yardage so you can plan projects and substitutions without guessing. These three together are my budget-crafter’s toolkit for making mystery yarn actually usable.
