Some Voice Memos to Mum attempts to articulate the feeling of place changing through time and distance. Born in Melbourne, Molly moves to the Pacific North West. Their idea of this new environment is initially harsh, americanized and one of ‘spearmint’. This is fuelled by comparisons to a map of Melbourne that is made up of warm suburban memories. As time passes these understandings of place change. The granite and pine of the Pacific Coast now feel warm, rugged and handsome like drinking whiskey by a fireplace and Melbourne quickly becomes overexposed and dry, like a spaghetti western. These memos act as a reminder that place is a subjective experience and encourages the viewer to find ‘barnacle’ moments whatever their surroundings.
