MSD Public Lecture: Material Anthropology

182 views· 58:38· Mar 15, 2024

In this lecture, Takeshi Hayatsu discusses his ongoing material research projects through his teaching and practice. Hayatsu Architects are interested in developing architecture that is fantastic, intuitive, empathetic, and polyphonic; one that derives meaning from more than one source and plays with ritual and mysticism in contemporary culture. Like Robinson Crusoe on his tropical island, their approach is improvisational and hands-on. They promote hand drawings, physical model making, 1:1 prototype testing and self-build. This lecture was presented as part of Design Studio E, a Master of Architecture subject at the Melbourne School of Design on Monday 4 September 2023. It was moderated by Nancy Ji, Lecturer in Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.
