Jeremy McLeod is the founder of Breathe Architecture and of Nightingale Housing, and Ali Galbraith is design lead at Breathe, and designer behind many of the Nightingale projects. They also run the Nightingale Night School studio at MSD. Nightingale is a not-for-profit housing provider leading the way in Melbourne and Australia. It is creating beautiful buildings, at scale, tackling one of the hardest challenges in Australia, and providing a radical provocation to the rest of the development industry. As Jeremy says, ‘if the system is broken, design a better system’. Nightingale a way of using design to understand an insanely complex problem, and then making a real alternative. The way Jeremy and Ali teach is both about understanding people and their needs – the imaginative potential of architecture, as well as doing thorough feasibility, to make sure that it’s practical and will stand up. This talk was part of the ‘Removing Barriers, Beyond the Classroom’ series, for the students of Architecture Design Thesis at Melbourne School of Design. This series is intended to point toward life after uni, by introducing students to inspiring thinkers and do-ers who are working in different ways.
