Built environment professionals face increasingly complex challenges spanning multiple goals, including taking climate change action. However, recent research highlights gaps in knowledge, skills and capacities of many professionals across numerous sectors. This symposium theme discusses how the climate change capabilities of built environment professionals can be developed and maximised to meet the scale and pace of action required. The discussion considers the development of practitioners’ capabilities and the ways that innovation, professional agency, and an engaged public can be integrated within complex regulatory and financial settings. This session culminates in the development of a ‘built environment climate change charter’ to inform and underpin accelerated action and commitment by built environment professional associations and higher education institutions. Moderator: Prof Alan March (Professor in Urban Planning, University of Melbourne) Panellists: Karen Cain (Director, Transition and Recovery Australia) Jane Cassidy (National President, Australian Institute of Architects) Natasha Palich (Principal at Sense Art and Design, CASBE Executive Officer) Anna Hancock (Executive Director, Pollination Group) Jonathan Spear (Chief Executive Officer, Infrastructure Victoria) This symposium was partially funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council's Discovery Projects funding scheme (project DP200101378). Presented by the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne.
