In this video, I walk you through how to read a file line by line in Java using the classic (and still super practical) combo: FileReader + BufferedReader. I start with a simple setup—an input file sitting in the root folder of the Java project—and then I build the proper structure around it, including a try/catch block so you can handle file-reading errors the right way with an IOException. Since the file is plain text, FileReader works perfectly as the input stream. From there, I show why BufferedReader matters: it reads more efficiently by buffering data, so you’re not doing slow, tiny reads over and over. I also point out that you can write the initialization in a shorter, cleaner way, and then I cover the part people forget—closing resources. I explain both options: manually calling close(), or using try-with-resources so everything closes automatically (cleaner and safer). Finally, I demonstrate how readLine() returns one line at a time, and how to wrap that in a loop to read the entire file. By the end, you’ve got a fast, clean, and reliable file-reading setup you can reuse in real projects.
