In this Apple Watch tutorial, I show you exactly how to open, calibrate, and actually use the Compass app so you can navigate with precision. I start from the very beginning—press the Digital Crown to open the app menu, scroll down, and tap Compass—then I walk you through what you’re seeing on the main compass view. I also show how rotating the Digital Crown lets you zoom in and out, and why fully zooming in can change the layout for more precise navigation. From there, I cover the features that make the Compass app genuinely useful outdoors: realtime elevation at the bottom of the screen, dropping a waypoint with the pin icon (and customizing it with an icon, name, and color), and using Backtrack with the footsteps icon to record your path. When you’re ready to head back, I show you how to retrace steps and follow your original route. Finally, I jump into the information panel in the top-left corner where you can view direction, elevation, coordinates, and all saved waypoints—plus edit waypoints, set a target, use bearing to follow a set direction, and even enable elevation alerts.
