If you've been with me for a bit, you know I love watches, always have an EDC watch on, and use them as momentos to mark milestones and other special moments in time as I go through life. I'd consider myself a watch "purist" - with the watches I look at and desire as really quite traditional. So checking out a mechanical wristwatch that's so out of left-field from what I'm used to was a real treat. ================= TIMELINE & LINKS 🔗 ================= Some of the links below are affiliate links. Wristwatches, especially mechanical ones, are so fascinating to me - the fact that all those hundred of parts, all fitting inside a case that fits on the wrist, can all work together at such a small scale. This CIGA Design Blue Planet really is such a unique and beautiful - albeit - weird piece - and it's nice to know there are brands taking risks like this one. As someone who is really familiar with manufacturing - the amount of time, effort, and teamwork to create something like a watch - even if the TRULY hard part - the movement - is a third party insert - is insane... and with this CIGA Design Blue Planet - that dial - the micro artistry, though of course, nowhere near the quality of the dials of say, Grand Seiko, is definitely more challenging to execute than 99+% of all other watches on the market today... including the ultra-luxury pieces in terms of manufacturing and execution. This watch is the first watch by a Chinese brand to win an award at "The Oscars for Watches" - the GPHG (Grand Prix Horologie de Geneve) - the Geneva Grand Prize of Horology. CIGA Design had already raked in innumerable awards from Red Dot design awards, to I.F. awards, to German Design awards, and now - with the GPHG - finally sees them being recognized on a global scale for what they actually make: wristwatches. What are your thoughts? Are you like me, and are too conservative with watches to desire this one? Or are you a maverick with your watches and love it?
