I got tired of paying for dictation tools that didn't paste where I wanted. So I built my own. Phonics is a free, open-source dictation app for Windows. It runs Whisper locally on your machine for speech-to-text, then cleans it up with a fast LLM layer (LM Studio, Grok, or OpenAI). Press a hotkey, talk, and it pastes wherever your cursor is. Emails, AI agent prompts, messages, whatever. It sits in your system tray, auto-updates, and you can fork it if you want to make it better. Windows only for now. Mac version coming soon. 0:00 - Why I built this 0:23 - What Phonics does 0:55 - First setup + Whisper install 1:42 - Transcription options (local, Grok, OpenAI) 2:56 - Cleanup with LM Studio (GPT-OSS 20B) 3:53 - Live demo 5:14 - Wrap up Download Phonics (free): https://github.com/mrchevyceleb/phonix LM Studio: https://lmstudio.ai More free AI coding tools: https://bananacode.ai Subscribe for more AI tools I build in public #OpenSource #Dictation #SpeechToText #AI #WhisperAI #FreeTools
