Neutral Buoyancy Scuba Fin Pivot skill on your PADI IDC Course Open Water Presentation. How to evaluate the PADI Fin Pivot on your PADI IDC Course, demonstrated by PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg - Neutral Buoyancy Scuba in the Open Water during the IDC Presentations using the Fin Pivot method. Chapters and timestamps: 00:00 Intro 00:23 Signal skill 00:36 Assign roles 00:57 Teach first scuba student the Fin Pivot 01:15 Identify and correct first problem 01:34 Continuo the neutral buoyancy scuba skill 02:10 Give positive reinforcement and reminder proper technique 02:14 Communicate with the Divemaster 02:41 Teach the second student 03:12 Identify and correct second problem It is optional to teach the Neutral Buoyancy Scuba Fin Pivot skill in the PADI Open Water Diver course. However the Fin Pivot skill can still be assigned on the PADI IE and therefore should always be practiced on the PADI IDC. Some diving instructors do prefer to teach the Fin Pivot, also in their Open Water Diver courses. This is the PADI performance requirement (Objective) from the PADI Instructor Manual: Become neutrally buoyant by adjusting air in the BCD (or dry suit) with the low pressure inflator. Steps to perform the Neutral Buoyancy Scuba Fin Pivot skill in open water: Place your students on the sea bottom. Make sure that they are not touching any aquatic life. You can also choose to have them neutrally buoyant above the bottom before they start. Organise your Divemaster and signal him to look after the student(s) that is not performing the skill. Then take one person and place him infront of the other student(s), preferably with his/her head on the left and legs on the right. This enables you to be on the side of his or her LPI while still being able to see the other students. Make sure the student stretches his/her legs in a V shape and only have the tips of the fins touching the bottom. The student will then go down flat on the belly. You should now have your left hand ready to adjust the LPI if needed and your right hand above the students tank valve. It is important to grab the tank valve only when needed to control a problem. The students should now add a bit of air into the BCD with the LPI and then by breathing in rise and by exhaling fall in a controlled manner, really using their lungs for buoyancy control. If any problems occur during the Neutral Buoyancy Scuba Fin Pivot skill, the instructor should correct then and continuo the skill performance. To be sure the student has mastered the Fin Pivot skill I recommend to have him or her go up and down 3 times flawlessly.
