How do I reserve the MakeHaven Media Room?

Accepted Answer

I reserve it by scanning the QR code on the door. Reservations need to be made at least 4 hours in advance and can be up to 8 hours long. If someone doesn’t show within 15 minutes, anyone else can use the space, and staff can reject reservations if needed.

What do I need to do to get access to the Media Room (badging)?

Because it’s a badged room, I have to watch the video, take the quiz, and do a checkout with a facilitator. After the checkout, I get a code to access the room. That code is what actually gets me in.

How do I log into the Media Room computer at MakeHaven?

Once I’m badged, I click into the login box and scan my membership card on the card scanner. The screen will show that access is granted. From there, I can use the workstation like normal.

How do I set up the Focusrite 18i8 so audio comes through the speakers?

Accepted Answer

First, I make sure the speakers are powered on and the Focusrite isn’t muted in Focusrite Control. Then in Windows sound settings, I select “Focusrite USB Audio” so the computer routes audio through the interface. If sound still isn’t coming out, I check whether the monitor output is set to the right outputs (1–2 vs ALT 3–4).

When should I turn on 48V phantom power in the Media Room?

I only turn on 48V when I’m using a condenser microphone, because it needs power to work. The 48V buttons are split: one for inputs 1–2 and one for 3–4. If I’m using a dynamic mic (like the podcast mics), I keep 48V off because sending phantom power to gear that doesn’t need it could damage it.

What’s the difference between mic level, instrument level, and line level on the Focusrite?

Mic level is the lowest signal and should come in on XLR—basically the only thing I run on XLR in this room is microphones. Instruments should use a 1/4" cable and only go into inputs 1 or 2 because those are the ones with the instrument option. Line level is also 1/4" and may need PAD if the signal is too hot; speaker level is amplified and shouldn’t be plugged into the interface.

How do I record audio in Reaper with the Focusrite in the Media Room?

In Reaper, I verify Preferences are set to ASIO with the “Focusrite USB ASIO” driver. Then I insert a new track, choose the correct input, arm the track, and hit record. When I stop, I save the project—but I don’t rely on the computer’s D: drive long-term, so I bring my own storage or upload to bucket.makehaven.org.

What’s the right way to coil cables in the Media Room?

I use the over-under method: one overhand loop, then one underhand loop, alternating as I go. That keeps the cable from getting twisted and helps it last longer. When I’m done, I strap it with the Velcro and put it back neatly so the next person isn’t dealing with a mess.
