In this badging video at MakeHaven, I walk through how I use our Bailey slab roller to turn a chunk of clay into consistent, flat slabs. The whole point of a slab roller is simple: when you’re not throwing on the wheel and you need flat material—like a cookie for the kiln or slabs for handbuilding—this is the fast, repeatable way to get there. I start by prepping a manageable chunk of stoneware and grabbing a silicone mat and the correct canvas (the clean one without the darker clay marks). I show how to load the canvas over the machine, place the clay on the bed, and use the thickness handle to set your gap—starting thicker (around an inch) and then stepping down to something like 1/2" or 3/8". The machine is powerful enough to go straight to final thickness, but I demonstrate it more gradually so you can see what’s happening. I also call out the big safety note: keep your fingers clear of the rollers—just guide the clay into contact. Finally, I cover a common mistake: placing clay too close to the canvas crease. As the clay spreads, it can build up at that fold and even blow out the back of the canvas, so center it away from the crease. When you’re done, clean any clay off the melamine tables, and make sure your clay is the right consistency—not wet/sticky, and not so dry it cracks when rolled.
