From skin cancer diagnosis to healing: One patient’s story of resilience

When Courtney Voss went in for a routine dermatology visit, her doctor found a melanoma on her cheek. That diagnosis began an unexpectedly long and emotional journey of multiple Mohs surgeries, skin removal, tissue expansion and facial reconstruction. With the support of her family, colleagues and a compassionate care team led by Amy Pittman, MD, a Loyola Medicine facial reconstructive surgeon, Courtney navigated the difficult healing process. Now, she protects her skin from the sun's harmful rays and works to raise awareness of the dangers of skin cancer. She hopes her experience encourages others to take sun safety seriously and prevent what she went through.
