Backstories don't make Good CHARACTERS | Character Motivation Explained

Whether your are playing a game, writing a novel, or acting, it is important to get to the root of what your character WANTS. We want to tell GOOD stories! My training as an actor revolves around understanding characters, and how to interpret them. Which is very difficult to do if the script is poorly written. There is an obsession I have noticed with modern reboots and adaptations of writers wanting to explore character backstories. "How did this character become who they are? Let's create a backstory for them and then make an entire series around it!". But good backstories are not why we fall in love with characters. People are more than a culmination of the things that have happened to them.
