About This Video

Are you familiar with the concept of evolution? In this essay I take Planet of the Apes seriously as more than “just another reboot,” because the modern trilogy does something that most IP revivals don’t: it feels like true speculation. I rewatched nine films—starting with the 1968 original and its four sequels, detouring through the 2001 Tim Burton version (life’s too short), and then returning to Rise, Dawn, and War—to trace how the filmmaking, themes, and metaphors evolve along with the series itself. What I’m really asking is: why apes? Not as a simple allegory for race or class, and not as a man-versus-nature parable, but as a thought experiment about what happens when humanity is forced to reckon with another species that is close enough to be our equal, yet different enough to make co-existence painfully difficult. The key, for me, is language—Frans de Waal’s answer to what makes us “special,” and the trilogy’s cornerstone for identity, culture, fear, dogma, and conflict. Dawn is my favorite because it de-escalates for as long as it can, letting hope exist before tragedy takes over, and War completes the arc by showing both the burden and the strange, fragile promise of a species condemned to permanent dialogue.
