About This Video

I’ve always believed what Roger Ebert said: great movies enlarge us. In this video, I bring together the 50 films that most profoundly impacted my worldview—movies that changed my life for the better. This isn’t meant to be another “best movies ever” ranking. Instead, I organize the list into 10 categories of meaning—different areas of life where cinema can transform us—each with five films ordered by year, not by some arbitrary hierarchy. I begin with the fundamentals: existence, mortality, and the cosmic frame that makes our personal concerns feel both small and strangely sacred. From Bergman’s The Seventh Seal and its aching silence in the face of God, to Kubrick’s 2001 and its primal awe, to Blade Runner’s questions about the soul and the blurry boundary of humanity—these films don’t hand out answers, but they sharpen the questions. And then there are works like Malick’s The Tree of Life, which invites me to contemplate suffering, grace, and the beauty we so easily take for granted, or Tarr’s The Turin Horse, a brutalist poem of anti-creation that moves me even when I can’t fully explain why. The takeaway is simple: if you let them, these films can change how you see your life—and what you choose to carry back into the ordinary world.
