I tested the Positive Grid Spark 2 to see if it’s actually worth the $300, and the answer is yes—if you’re willing to tweak. The stock presets weren’t my thing (boxy/digital), but once I started changing heads, killing the noise gate, and shaping mids/boost, it turned into a legit shred-friendly practice amp with a ton of options.
Pros
- +Huge amount of tone modeling and customization in the app
- +Can work great for shred/metal once dialed in
- +Good value for $300 compared to older budget practice amps
Cons
- -Factory presets sounded boxy and digital to me
- -App is basically required for full features (not very plug-and-play)
- -Some models/features appear locked behind a paywall
- -Preset volumes can be wildly inconsistent
