This is the Sequre SQ A110 soldering iron I’m testing in the video because it’s ridiculously cheap for what it claims to be. I wanted to see if it’s actually usable for DIY work, repairs, and the kind of tinkering that comes with electric skateboard builds.

Pros

  • +Very affordable price for a soldering iron
  • +Good entry point for DIY tinkering and basic soldering

Cons

  • -May not be ideal for heavy gauge power wiring if you need lots of heat
  • -Budget tools can be more hit-and-miss on long-term reliability

What Lee Wright says

com and you can get it in the uk for about 30 pounds it's all about the same price no matter where you get it from but this can be gotten from secure direct for 29
99 so it's really really cheap and you know it's one it looks like it's one of those solder lines of the wire on the end that just plugs directly in there's nothing wrong with those soldering eyes i used to have one of them for years if you've been around it for a while you will have seen me use it over and over again i burnt the tip out i bought a new tip i burnt that out and i eventually decided to upgrade to the solder9 that i have now which is a very expensive jbc soldering iron i can't even remember how much this thing was about 500 pounds which is a lot of money um it's absolutely phenomenal don't get me wrong but it's totally overkill for the sort of stuff that we do all the time if you're doing a lot of soldering an expensive iron makes sense but if you're just doing hobby work something like this could be really good for you so without further ado let's get it apart let's have a look what's in here and uh we'll have a little test of the iron okay then let's get it open you know me razor blade don't need to get any fancier than that it's got like a protective plastic shrink wrap on it how's it open from the top i actually don't know what you're getting here um oh no centered me with a us plug in it i think i've got an adapter or i'll put a uk plug on that we also got looks like a spare tip and a stand in a minute and some instructions let me try and find an adapter for this and if i can't i'll put a plug on it okay so i did actually find a adapter so i've kept the original plug on there because i am going to give this away guys i'm not going to keep this so whoever i give this away to they may need that plug on there so i haven't bothered taking it off but yes i've got a plug so i'll be able to test it so i think first let's have a look what's in this little accessories bag okay yeah so the first thing is a stand this is a little metal stand i think you just push it out like that and then when your iron's hot you hold it in there i mean it's it's pretty flimsy it can be screwed down to something if you wanted to screw it to a block of wood or something um but it's pretty flimsy but i mean this whole thing is 30 so i wasn't expecting too much from that i must admit the other thing we've got in here is a chisel tip now these things are really cool big chunky tips when you're doing big powerful jobs really nice way to get the heat into the part as standard it comes with a sort of medium sized soldering tip like a general purpose one this is the one that you would use for for most most stuff to be honest that you can bring out when you need a lot of heat into stuff so yeah it's pretty nice to get that for free as well so let's have a look at the iron itself now this is a handheld iron as i expected with the cable obviously um it's 110 watts that's what the sq110 the 110 stands for means it's 110 watt anything over 100 watts should be plenty for what the sort of stuff we do big chunky cables and whatnot you can reduce the power down if you need to there's three buttons this one's a power button and then these are basically the temperature increase and decrease and it's got like a soft silicone area for your fingers and then there's a quick release here which i'm assuming is going to release the chuck yeah so you do that you release that part take that off new one on pretty easy and then they're not on obviously you don't want to do that when it's hot that's pretty quick to change tips you do that before you start soldering before you power this on at all obviously guys um there are some smart functions on here you can set it i don't know if it's set as standard but you can set it to reduce the power or reduce the temperature sorry by 100 degrees when you stop using it it says between zero and 30 minutes i'm not quite sure how you set how you set that but we'll have a look um but apparently it can do minus 100 degrees so so i think we better plug this in and have a look at the display and see what it's like apparently it's got a nice display according to the instructions anyway right automatically came on when i put the power on turn it off again so that's the on off button there's a little bit of delay when you turn it on it's currently set to 25 degrees okay so it's got quite a nice interface um you press hopefully you can see this you press the button temperature goes up you can do it individually hopefully that showed you no idea or you can press and hold it and it'll climb down quickly and that is about it really i'm not entirely sure okay so the display the actual temperature control goes up to 500 degrees be interested to see if this actually does go to 500 degrees the pen's pretty warm you can feel it's warm i can smell it starting to burn off now starting to season that tip get all of the chemicals off that were um that we use in the factory to make it pretty nasty stuff guys do this in a ventilated area right that's now saying 500 degrees guys i can't verify it whether it is 500 degrees or not but it does feel quite hot right i'm gonna turn that off um put it on the stand and let's get something to solder [Music] so [Music] okay guys so i've done a bit of soldering with the sq a110 soldering iron now basically i've soldered this which is a load of rubbish but what it is is an xt90s which is a fairly typical connector that we use and i also soldered a bit of wire to a bit of copper braid and to be honest the iron did produce some really nice results i mean that's a really nice joint really nicely soldered good mechanical and electrical connection and you know the same here you know that is that's really on there definitely not coming apart so it can do the job although my normal temperature of soldering is 360 degrees like i said earlier on my other soldering iron at 360 degrees this was too cold i had to set this all the way to 500 degrees in order for it to solder nicely and when it was at 500 it did solder nicely it was actually quite nice to use the interface is very simple very easy iron to use i quite like it um especially for the price guys for 30 dollars it is cheap and cheerful it's going to get the job done maybe it's a good option to throw in your tool kit with it being sort of quite portable um if you're out and about you need to do soldering at work or whatever it's a good option although if you're doing a lot of soldering at home you might be better off investing a bit more money in like a better solder station but yeah for for 30 this thing is plenty you could build an electric skateboard or do any sort of project no problems with this whatsoever so yes i did like it i thought it was all right 30 pretty good bargain [Music] my
