Who Was Mansa Musa? | Learn about one of the wealthiest people in world history

Have you ever heard of a man named Mansa Musa? He was the leader of one of the wealthiest kingdoms in world history! Today, we are going to learn more about Mansa Musa.   First, let’s talk about the Mali Empire. The Mali Empire (https://www.worldhistory.org/image/10129/map-of-the-mali-empire-c-1337-ce/) spanned a large area of West Africa, extending from the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in the north, to the forested regions of present-day southern Mali, Guinea, and the northern part of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire in the south. It sat between West African gold mines and the fertile agricultural area of the Niger River floodplain. Plus, the Empire was the main trade route for salt and other commodities.   Mansa Musa was mentored by his relative, Sundiata, and then ascended to the throne of the Mali Empire around 1307 CE. 17 years later, he went on Hajj, which means he made a pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city of the Islamic faith. With a caravan including 60,000 men, 12,000 of whom were enslaved, all clothed in the finest of Persian silk, Musa’s trip became famous for its ostentatious displays of wealth.
