Did you know the history of the Olympics stretches all the way back to ancient Greece, and is one of the oldest sporting traditions in the world? We are talking nearly three thousand years old! Today, in this video for kids, we are going to learn more about the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Let’s take a minute and travel back to ancient Greece. The first Olympic Games were held in the city of Olympia in 776 BCE. They were held in honor of the Greek god, Zeus, and included events like running, wrestling, and chariot racing. The Games continued for centuries until they were banned in 393 CE by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. In modern times, a Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin is credited with reviving the Olympic Games. He believed that sports could promote peace and unity amongst countries. To honor its roots, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. The first ever Winter Games took place 28 years later in 1924 in Chamonix, France.
