About This Video

In this short, I’m calling out one of the biggest “beginner reptile” myths out there: bearded dragons are not automatically easy just because pet stores push them that way. Most pet beardies I see aren’t thriving, and it’s usually not because the keeper doesn’t care—it’s because they were never taught how these animals actually work. Beardies are opportunistic omnivores, and their diet changes with age and metabolism. Juveniles are in a rapid growth phase, so they need a heavy insect-based diet with high protein, high calcium, and high energy—dozens of insects per day isn’t optional, it’s physiology. I also break down the two areas that make or break beardie health: nutrition quality and lighting. Feeder insects are often nutritionally incomplete with a poor calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, so if you’re not gut-loading, dusting with calcium, and rotating feeders, you’re not meeting their biological needs. And the most critical piece is UVB lighting—without UVB they can’t synthesize D3, and without D3 they can’t absorb calcium, which is how you end up with metabolic bone disease. On top of that, they’re ectothermic, so if your basking temps and thermal gradient are wrong, digestion slows and impaction risk goes up. They decline slowly and mask symptoms, so by the time you notice a problem, it’s often already advanced.
