Jackson's

I include a Jackson’s search link for Neptune brushes because they’re my go-to for watercolor. They’re a soft synthetic vegan imitation squirrel and they hold an amazing amount of water, which is perfect for wet washes and letting granulation settle. If you want softer edges and longer working time, these are a great fit.

Pros

  • +Holds a lot of water for smooth washes
  • +Soft feel that works well for granulating effects

Cons

  • -Softer brushes may feel less snappy if you prefer stiff control

What Kimberly Crick Art says

hi in this video I'll talk about my experience with visceral watercolors from Belgium I like a few of their unusual convenience mixtures which are made with unique combinations of pigments resulting in some inspiring colors you won't see in other brands they do offer a couple less common pigments such as ultramarine pink and violet but for the most part this brand does not carry many rare pigments or granulating colors I'll also Swatch some samples from Jackson's 10 2 primary mixing set which a fellow artist kindly sent me so I could include them in this review the 10 tube set has a great assortment of light fest mostly single pigment primary mixing colors it includes intense High pigment load examples of some of my favorite highly recommended pigments including a cool red magenta pr122 the warm Scarlet Red pr255 two highly useful Blues the gently granulating ultramarine and an intense smooth phthalo blue the Payne's gray was the only multi-pigment mixture in this set it is a particularly deep valued version compared to other brands that performs very well as a shadow color or neutral tint to darken mixtures this mixture has Pleasant granulation texture with some minor color separation in wet washes which is really beautiful when used on its own this set would be great for a beginner who wants to make sure they can mix a wide range of colors but I do wish that Jackson's had included a burnt umber or sepia in this bundle the warm burnt sienna is too similar to oxide orange a dark valued or cool bra might have been more useful here perhaps even swapping out one of these for a green leaning yellow pigment such as nickel Azo py150 or green gold py129 aside from that it's a very nice professional quality set my only other complaint being that the price is a little higher than I could buy these common pigments for in Brands like Roman small or da Vinci in a previous video I talked about my two favorite Israel colors Norman Green and pottery pink these are made from Fairly unusual pigment combinations so you're unlikely to find a close color match to these from another brand but of course you can mix similar DIY replicas using other brands of watercolor if you already own the single pigment paints made from the ingredient codes listed here for replicating most mixtures any professional brand offering these pigments May provide similar results but be aware that brands have varying granulation texture some Brands offer course less finely ground versions of pigments that may offer more texture than others while it is more versatile and economical to buy single pigment Paints in larger tubes to mix yourself every so often I come across a convenience mixture that I find really inspiring and perfectly made just the way it is a few of Israel's colors are just right for me with nothing I'd like to improve upon I appreciate them for saving me time and using up pain attempting to mimic this exact color that being said powdery pink is simple to mimic if you happen to own any Brands magenta and buff titanium you could mix them together since magenta and buff titanium are quite versatile colors on their own I usually include them in most palettes I set up when I run out of this color I may find myself just mixing it on demand each painting session by brushing color from the single pigment dry pans together in a mixing dish this brand offers over 10 different mixtures featuring metallic effects that are pretty subtle unlike most metallic or pearlescent watercolors which tend to be entirely focused on that effect these seem to focus on the underlying color letting the Shimmer take the back seat you may be able to mimic them using just a small Touch of your calero fine Tech or Paul Reuben's Mica Paints in with your normal matte watercolors I will warn you that I tried Imperial Moon steel blue and a very weak color called Eternal Summit a couple years ago but those older tubes were really hard to roulette from dry perhaps there has been some improvement to the balance of honey and glycerin added to the binder in recent years all of the paints I tried after 2021 were wet much easier I allowed the shimmery Boreal blue to dry in a pan for a month before comparing it to a fresh tube it reactivated with a damp brush easily without much scrubbing this problem might be fixed or isro's paints may be harder to reactivate in certain low humidity environments despite this brand using some honey and glycerin the paints derive much more solid and less sticky than other brands that use honey foreign [Music] experience with this brand is positive I have had some other minor problems certain colors may be a bit weak especially those including tricky pigments like ultramarine violet and pink or Viridian Cerulean and some of their lightest color metallics unfortunately these ultramarines performed worse than the same pigment from other brands with Gummy pale values despite using a lot of well stirred paint if you're looking for The Uncommon pigment ultramarine pink pr259 then I personally prefer the stronger versions for make yellow or Roman small a few of my older tubes suffered from excessive binder separation over time on the bright side the paint can be easily stirred back together I was happy to get a good look at the binder before I did though and noticed it was very clear and lacked color this happened to prove a really good thing to me this row advertises the use of high quality superbly transparent Gum arabic and honey and it's true this helps to keep the pigments looking vibrant especially compared to other brands which have seen murky brownish yellow binder which sometimes discolors the pigments Jackson's currently only carries the Small 7ml Tube size I'll put the link in the description below if you'd like to check them out if you happen to live near Belgium you may be able to find the more economical 20 ml size through visceros website most of Jackson's small tubes range between six to ten dollars each which after drying shrinkage then refilling to the top was just about one full-size pan while the overall quality of this paint is very good I am unlikely to buy most basic common colors from this brand which I can find more affordably elsewhere such as the reasonably priced Alternatives from Roman small or Rosa Gallery DaVinci is also great if you're in the USA they have some dirt cheap Basics including my favorite burnt umber for as low as 12 dollars for a huge 37 and all tube which I got over five full pans or at least 11 half pans out of however what I will buy from ISRO again is a few of the unique color combinations you won't find elsewhere like Norman Green powdery pink and Boreal blue these colors happen to inspire me helping me feel more creative during my painting sessions and are colors I may not have ended up mixing myself this watercolor has a fairly moderate to low flow rate most colors do not quickly disperse but are easier to control for gradient Blends and detail work generally speaking some fine particle pigments will flow faster than heavy coarse or granulating ones I found most of their colors to be pleasant to paint with I don't think many artists would regret a purchase from this brand still I do prefer sennelier or even a Gallo when it comes to control slightly smoother color into color blending as well as creating careful maststone to diluted gradients depending on your color preferences and local purchasing options I'd say this is a wonderful professional brand that may have a few gems for you I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a few carefully chosen colors to use alongside other paints on a multi-brand palette I felt like some of my personal favorite colors were missing from this Brand's relatively small catalog though so I see myself mixing these pans into my other sets to avoid feeling limited some of my most used colors that they are missing include the smooth Punchy coral red PR 209 nickel Azo yellow py150 and many heavily granulating pigments that make effortless color separating mixtures such as Mars black pbk-11 Potter's pink pr233 brown pbr11 and a Cobalt till pg50 I hope to see this brand expand their catalog further to include even more single pigment options as well as continue to create unique convenience mixtures that set them apart I'd love to hear if you've tried anything I talked about today and be sure to let me know some of your favorite colors that end up on the palettes you set up foreign [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] if you'd like to see more you can find all of my detailed Swatch card images results from my independent light fast testing and other Art Supply reviews on my website I'm currently building a huge pigment database where thousands of colors can be compared side by side with paint from other brands updates about this project along with line art drawings and high-res color scans are also available on patreon thanks for watching
