Why buy expensive MTB pedals if budget pedals last longer?

For years I've been running Fooker pedals with success. The only time fooker pedals have let me down is with the needle bearing, which is their premium pedal. Standard Fookers last me years! Surprisingly, when I spend more on a pedal it seems to wear faster. Recently, I noticed the $180 pedals on a friends mountain bike had lots of wear.....$180 buck pedals worn in a few hundred trail miles. That's crazy to me and has sent me back to my trusty $20 Fooker Pedals that I know last for years on the same trails.
