Specifically, loud to soft transitions with very little time in between. Quick, Loud-to-Soft transitions are dependent on the mastery of 3 basic concepts: 1. Stroke Types (full, down, tap, up) 2. Shifting (zone changes, moving from one area of drum to another) 3. Touch (adjusting the velocity of the stroke) For this video, I meticulously combed through Delecluse's Douze Etudes for Snare Drum and found every single loud-to-soft transition with little time to prepare. I then categorized them based on the elements of the last loud note, and the first soft note. These elements consisted of single strokes, buzz rolls, and drags, allowing me to assign groups such as SS (single to single), DR (Drag to roll), etc. I also explore a variety of practice techniques pertaining to the most common loud/soft transitions, including single-to-roll, single-to-single, and roll-to-single.
