people to use my link in the description will receive a one month free child of skillshare get started today so thanks again to skillshare for sponsoring this video and let's get cracking as you can see we are starting from a base coat of gray sear and there are a couple of options here if you want to skip a step you can just start with a base cat of White Scar spray but starting from Gray first of all goes better as a primer it goes smoother and causes less issues and this series is all about making our life easier starting from a gray spray also allows us to give it a little bit more depth to the paint job and third but most importantly it allows me to Shell for a product that I love it's the artify five piece dry R set which I have an affiliate link for in Amazon the best and most affordable dry brushes you will ever buy extremely high quality hair comes in a beautiful box with a sponge and some soap and it's about a third of price of R so what's not to love and again you will find a link for this dry brushes in the description just know that it is an affiliate link so I will get some money back but this video was not sponsored by artify I just really really love this product so the first step is going to do a dry brush using white and although you can use any white you want my preferred white right now for dry brushing and for a lot of things to coat white star as of lately if you seen some of my videos I've been dry brushing loading my brushes and doing the dry brushing over my wet palette because that gives me moisture in the piels and a softer look and we're start with number 11 and this is rare for me but makes sense because I want a super thick white application we need this to look basically white with some subtle Shadows of gray and I will be applying this over the model quite liberally as you can see it's really really important that you don't dry brush the same area a lot because paint needs to dry and if you don't let it give it enough time to dry it will lift off and leave an ugly result that's why I say that if you want to start from a pure white spray do so at some point though I'm going to stop with the large dry brush and move into smaller sizes I'm going to move into the five now so I have a lot more control and I can apply this exactly what I wanted there are other whites you can use of course white is basically all the same but I found that some paints like Pro acry that's why not using the pro acry can react badly to the express press or contrast so I the safest options for me are Citadel or dunan roads white is a color that needs to be built up in layers especially if you want a smooth result so I'm going to do several passes with this just be patient and finally if I really want some precision and detail I use number three which is my favorite brush of the set if I'm honest because again it allows me for super fine control and I can use this to stipple some volumetric highlights here and there as I always say the better job you do with this step the better the final result you're going to get so it really pays off if we spend a little more time doing the driver step than we are probably used to with that step done we are going to apply a contrast or in this case Express layer and there are several options we can go for here if you want a colder look I will just use something like tempar white if you want a warmer tone I would use mummy white which was assigned to be like a warm white color but in my case I want to do something neutral so I came up with an idea and I think it's pretty cool what I'm going to do is do one part mommy white one part Templar white and two parts Express medium that is one part of medium per part of paint paint but since we use one part of each of the colors we need two parts of medium and this gives us a super cool tone for a neutral dirty wi that I think looks pretty damn cool so I'm going to go and apply this over all of the armor the reason I'm choosing to do something different not just use Templar wi would would be like the standard version is because it seems like I always tend to do like a cold tone white and I wanted to do something different here just to show you that there are a lot of options and you don't have to just use the same cold white all the time and because this guy is going to be a White Scar and White Scar in the box art are warm white tilted tinted I thought this would be the coolest idea so as always go Section by section and absorb the excess I have a full guide on how to apply contrast or Express paints to the highest level possible I suggest you check it out if you're having issues applying contrast or Express over large surfaces like this Space Marine our wash is completely dry now and looks amazing I'm actually surprised how good that looks it's such a refreshing change from just the good old and a little bit tired cold white that I just feel great for this but usually I leave the final highlight as has an option but in this case that can be because we need to make this look extra wide in the edges and stuff like that to make it look like bright white but instead of doing the Classic Edge highlight by hand I'm going to use dry brushing just make sure we have the least amount of paint possible here and that is a very subtle change but one that is very much welcome at least for me because we now have bright white highlights in the very most exposed edges and stuff like that making it just perfect white finish and you can also smooth out some of the slight imperfections that can come from a well less refined express application and after all is done I would consider this a perfectly good standard for an army but I'm going to show you how we can Elevate this to the next level we need to do one thing which is increase the shading in the reses and there are several options for this B because this is zero skill and the primary objective of this series is to make life easier and as simple as possible after much debate I decided on using oil washes and we have several options for this for example if you went for a cold water white paints gray uh uptom has a version but you can also find it from Winston Newton and all of the other art Brands is a super nice super dark C black very useful to have you have options in the oil brasser range these are just thin down oil paints uh but because this was designed to be used for models they have very interesting colors that you can't find in normal artist oil ranges such as Starship base Larch which is a beautifully green brown you also would have some animal pin washing like this black and dark umber in fact I tested this out on the base you can see the dark umber here and the black there this was just one drop just one touch with a brush this is incredible the best pin washes for Animals I've ever seen are this AK pin wash black and dark umber I really wish they did more colors but I'm going to go with oils and in particular this one a Starship fth from oil brusher which is a beautiful warm brown color and we need to hin this down into a pin wash consistency and for that you will need a thinner and the last time I used oils which was in Myer skill plasma a lot of people got confused and one of the most prevalent questions people ask is what thinner are you using other lless thinners is the name of the product is the thinner you want to look for but you can also use some white SP and the way you use this I like to use this metal palettes like these metal containers is I will add a little bit of this wash of this oil then I take a synthetic brush and I just load it with the odorless thinners until it's nice and thin and the best thing about this is we will be able to clean this up afterwards but now I can just go and apply this into the res and look at how that flows is absolutely incredible if you want a better flow I would recommend you gloss varnish this the glossier the surface the easier it's going to flow but look at that it's pretty incredible if you've never done oil pin washes you are missing out and what will this do is obviously give us a much darker outline that color is going to tone down later so don't be afraid it might look super dark now but it's is not going to be that dark forever and yes this has a larger barrier of Entry than let's just say normal acrylics but it just doesn't require any skill whatsoever to apply and that's the thing with this series with the pin wash applied the only thing we need to do now is let it dry not cure just dry just get it to a point where it's not shiny anymore you can see here how in the backpack is still shiny from the white Spirits or the other thinners while in some places like here it's matte we need for the we need for the whole miniature to get matte and then we will get into the cleaning you can use several things for to clean up your models all the way from C tips which work well but can be a little bit rough to makeup sponges the best solution is to use a brush in this case the same we used to apply it just with a little bit of white Spirits in it very little you can see it there and this will completely remove any oil residue leaving you the cleanest result this can be a little bit more time consuming but if you you want precision and cleanliness this is the way to go or you could do a rough pass with a sponge and then use this just to clean up the very highest highlight points like that I recommend you have handy a paper towel so once you drip your brush in white Spirits you can just take the away the excess you need the minimum possible of course if you want your M filthier you just use the dry methods the sponge the cotton butts blue shop towels and the best thing about these oils is they dry incredibly matte look at how good that looks and how much more definition we have of course all of the parts that are going to be another color in this case the trim on the shoulders and stuff like that I'm not going to bother with a cleanup because that's just waste of time with the oil wash now completely dry our model is looking incredible but because I usually do a couple of extra steps I'm just going to go back and do a final white highlight using my normal brush this way I can pick up stuff like is nice and clearly you can see how just the Pure White makes a big difference [Music] here and as usual I'm only going to do this in the main view of the model and especially in this case it's really not necessary to do it anywhere else because the model looks amazing [Music] [Music] [Music] and this is the finished White Scar Marine looking absolutely amazing I actually think this one came out better than the heavy contrast counterpart and probably the best zos skill
