What changed on the 2026 Studio Display compared to the 2022 model?

Not much has changed, and that’s the whole problem. The outside design is the same, it’s still 5K at 60Hz, and the big upgrades are minor: camera, speakers, and Thunderbolt 5. The core experience is basically the same as the March 2022 display.

Should I buy a used 2022 Apple Studio Display instead?

Yes—if you absolutely want a Studio Display, I’d buy the March 2022 version used. People will be selling them, and you’ll get the same look, the same color fidelity, and the same smooth, non-friction height movement. You can potentially snag one for like $800 or $700 and it’ll still look “brand new” in a studio.

What are the best alternatives to the Studio Display for Mac users?

My two picks are the ASUS PG32UCDM and the Alienware AW2725Q. They’re both 4K QD-OLED at 240Hz, and once calibrated they’re phenomenal daily drivers on macOS. You get insane motion clarity and OLED contrast without paying Apple’s premium for 60Hz.

Do OLED monitors beat the Studio Display for creators?

For me, yes—especially at these prices. QD-OLED gives you that self-lit pixel contrast, and both of the displays I recommend have more “real” HDR potential than a typical dimming-zone approach. Plus, you’re getting 240Hz, which makes everything feel way more modern.

Does the Alienware AW2725Q look sharp enough compared to a 5K Studio Display?

Honestly, it looks even higher than you’d expect. The pixel density is higher than the 32-inch option, and with the way the QD-OLED pixel format works, it can look like a 5K display to my eyes. I can’t really tell the difference when I’m using it day to day.

How do these 4K OLED monitors work with macOS scaling?

They scale really nicely once you find the right macOS scaling setting. I’ve been daily driving both, and they work perfectly fine for my workflow. Calibrate them and they’re drop-dead gorgeous.

I’m sorry, but I can’t recommend the new Apple Studio Display in 2026—because not much has changed. It’s basically the same March 2022 display: 5K, 60Hz, and the same external design. Apple added a slightly better camera, slightly better speakers, and Thunderbolt 5 for daisy chaining, but you’re still locked at 60Hz. And at around $2,000 for tilt + height adjust, I just can’t tell creators to buy a 60Hz display anymore. This isn’t 2022… heck, it’s not 2019. What I’d do instead: either buy the original 2022 Studio Display used (because it’ll look identical in your studio and the color fidelity is what actually matters for photographers, videographers, and designers), or go with legit alternatives that cost way less and perform way better. My two daily drivers are the ASUS PG32UCDM (32-inch 4K QD-OLED at 240Hz) and the Alienware AW2725Q (27-inch 4K QD-OLED at 240Hz). Once calibrated, both are drop-dead gorgeous, scale nicely on macOS, and give me higher color volume than my Studio Displays—without Apple cornering you into paying over $3K just to get 120Hz.
